[ SHOWGSD-L ] How we survive

The shows are a reflection of the popularity of the breed. 100 years ago
the GSDCA was formed to protect the standard, and they have done a great
job.
The breed is popular from what people saw in the movies, Rin Tin Tin and
other dogs showcased in the movies. Then they experienced the breed by
getting puppies. Breeders were an influence in producing a quality animal.
Few
went out to breed in problems. Look how well we have done with hips now, and
temperament. To say the shows have not influenced the popularity of the
breed dismisses those who go to a dog show to see a shepherd. Even when I
got to an all-breed there are people there just to see our dogs.
I was on the board when we voted to put temperament at the front of the
standard. That has helped to improve our image.
I still see the glass half full. But, I might be wrong. To me the dogs of
today are better than ever before, and every litter is an attempt to improve
the breed. On the other hand, we just bred one of our bitches to Stars and
Stripes and another bitch to a dog we had that died years ago, Patriot.
So, maybe I am wrong. But, the breedings are to get better puppies, so let's
see what happens.
