One of the things I am working on in my breeding program is ears that come
up more quickly and that don't require taping.

I had a litter 9 months ago (my last litter... I am a big breeder).... all
the puppies ears came up on their own... had perfect ear sets... and were
strong. This litter was very (I repeat VERY) linebred (BIM Ch Pete of Fran-Jo
ROM 4,4,4-3 Sel Ch Survival's Eclipse 5,4-3, Ch Fran-Jo's Lexus of Norberge
ROM 4,3-2). Does this mean I have corrected my dilemma with taping ears????
NOT It does mean however; that I may be able to use these puppies in the
future to help correct ears in my line.

Since I have been very fortunate with the health of all my linebred dogs, I
don't necessarily think the answer lies with an outcross. It lies, I am
thinking, in the judicious breeding within the line. I am considering several
outcross breedings for the future but not because of problems I am getting but
instead because I see things in other lines I want. If my bitch produced
health problems bred into the line I SURELY wouldn't outcross her... I'd spay
her and get myself another bitch.

Fred Migliori once told us on the list about an inbreeding experiment he did
many years ago. He said the way to avoid problems was to pick the STRONGEST
and healthiest of your line to inbreed. Joan Ford told me yesterday that if
you see that there were problems in an inbred or linebred litter.... stop it
right there..... and don't breed those dogs further in ANY way.

In fact, I am more afraid to outcross than I am to linebreed because I know
what I have....with an outcross I don't necessarily know what I am bringing in
that I DON'T want. The things I may gain from an outcross are readily
apparent in any dog I might chose to breed my bitch to. It's the things I can't

see that scare me. But there are some awesome dogs out there who are
producing few problems and gorgeous puppies. I've done my homework on the
dogs that
interest me and I am excited about the future.
