Actually, one does not eliminate carriers from the gene pool,, but due to the added imformation , one can breed around them. ELiminateing carriers would limit the gene pool too drastically! This is critical in using DNA for genetic screening. When I was a delegate, some of the big researchers came to speak to us about DNA research. The advantage is that now you will know if your dog carries a problem or not. If he carries the gene you would not want to breed to an affected or another carrier. But you can use a carrier and even an affected depending on whether the gene's heritablity. If it is a simple recessive, then breeding a carrier to a clear would result in no affected progeny and 25% carrier. This allows breeders to move light years ahead in gradually eliminating the gene as well as allowing us to really know the status of littermates of affected animals. In the past, it was recommended that the littermates of affected dogs not be bred, this was too narrow for most breeders thus we have npt been able to make the big changes in percentages ofver the years. Secondly DNA research will give a much more accurate predictor of who will produce the problem. this has always been the issue with OFA, from the wa y we position the dogs to the whehter or not we anestithize them for an x-ray, OFa is not a good predictor of who will produce crippling hip dysplasia. Which is why you can breed several generations of OFA'd dogs and still come up with dysplastic progeny. Genetic testing will become another tool in the breeders box, it will also help seperate the good breeders from the bad, as it will be another added expense to producing quality pups. This will also help produce purebred dogs that will be healthier and will be proven healthier from conception. Susan 'Once we have the DNA Markers and then seek out the Pure Ones, from what Magic Dust can we hope to discover that One who is Pure and Undefiled by Deadly Diseases. From what Magic Dust??? ' Something to think about...JMO: barb williams You had better request a double order of that magic dust. You'll need a dog "and" a bitch that are "pure." With all of the condemnation of concentration in lines, I'm not sure what people would do with only those two to work with though. Tom Langlitz Susan w.
