I have owned a few long "stock" coated dogs (i.e. dogs with a coarse outer coat
and an undercoat) and one dog with a long single coat (i.e. soft, open outer
coat with no undercoat.) The long stock coated dogs never became waterlogged,
nor did they have much of a problem with picking of burrs and whatnot in the
field. If they did get a burr, it was pretty easy to remove.
Not true with the long single coated dog; he picked up every burr and small
twig within a 1/2 mile radius. Just kidding of course, but I swear the burrs
saw him coming. Not to mention dust! His coat was a "magnet" for undesirable
stuff. He also tended to have dry skin and dandruff, while our long stock
coated dogs never had any skin problems. Also, I hated having to trim the hair
between the toes of the long single coated dog. In the winter time, if I
didn't do this, the dog would develop painful "ice balls" between his toes.
I don't ever want to own a long single coated dog again, no matter how correct
the dog might otherwise be. To me, this type of coat is more than a minor
fault because of the problems the dog would have working in the field. I do
consider the long stock coat a minor fault as a dog with this type coat
shouldn't have a problem working in the field, just as the other longer coated
herding dog breeds don't have a problem working.
I would love to see more long stock coated dogs *of quality* in the ring.

I think some judges do weigh faults...there are also some who think a long
oat is more faulty because it can become waterlogged...not good on a dog
eant to work outdoors..............
