These were more or less people in the "thinking" stage...I don't have puppies and when I do I usually have quite a waiting list of qualified parties (have had GSDs, vet referrals, etc.) so I don't usually have to do the whole dog and pony show thing. My dogs are well socialized too, but you know, when it comes right down to it, I don't want to spend a few precious hours talking dogs, playing host to strangers "thinking" in the privacy of my home (buy a book, go to a dog show!!!) AND feeling like I have to have eyes in the back of my head and/or correcting someone's child (children). It's an intrusion and an imposition! When I think back to the old BJ's (the last "companion" puppies I bought, my choice, not Betty's or the dogs')...I was never in Betty's house. I met the puppies at 8 weeks not before. AND I showed up by myself, not with a car full of friends for show and tell! Can you JUST IMAGINE? But my problem very well could be that I don't have a kennel building. Those that do meet people at the kennel and just don't invite them into their home. I received quite a few good suggestions. The "meet me at a show" thing I was doing, but love the club meeting idea! Those who said "potty the children" before coming....hilarious! My one powder room is down a hall loaded w/ art that leads to the master bedroom. Can I tell you how many times I have been sitting w/ parents at the kitchen table and children have gotten rambunctious in that hall on the way to the powder room and/or opened the door to the master???? (MY PARENTS WOULD HAVE KILLED US!) My kitchen is open to the family room...get your $#@* shoes off that leather furniture! (OK the dogs ARE allowed!) The kitchen leads to a very formal dining room (more art) that is behind a CLOSED french door. I've had children open THAT door and want to wander too, I've had children open cabinets and I've had them open the fridge and some (not all!) parents just sit there w/ a deer in the headlights look. Admittedly if they were my offspring I'd probably have a similar look lol. Love LOVE the suggestion that children must be sitting, children under 5 in a parent's lap. I'm going to put that one into place when I do have puppies (visitors at 6 weeks then picking up puppy after 8 weeks). I DO have them sit on the floor for the 6 week visit but it still gets crazy with 4-5 people and 2 or 3 puppies they are selecting from. And I don't want to sound like I don't like children...I had a lot of fun decorating for a surprise b-day party for one of the families from the last litter...I just don't care for ill behaved children! I have corrected other people' children in my home....my house, my rules. It seems to fall on deaf ears though. The very next time I DO have puppies, I am going to have Ileana up to manage the flow of children. I'll make you a nice lunch/dinner GF! Thanks again all!
