I invite everyone to come to the GSDCO meetings. They can meet the members, meet dogs and we can answer the basic questions they do not even know they have. It is good education and they get to meet without any pressure. I do this whether I have pups or not as I generally do not. If they want to come to the house, fine, but it is far enough out here to make them think twice about the trip without being serious about getting a dog. But that does not mean I will feel they are right for one of mine. I love to have people come over and meet the dogs, be that puppies or the old guys. I had a couple of people just recently who just wanted to meet Dexter. Come on over. Want to bring the kids? No problem. I am very comfortable correcting someone else's child. <G> My old dogs were used to kids, since we had 3. My current dogs dont have that advantage, so I take them to the park, and work with the Scouts, and give my dogs that experience. I love when people want to meet GSD's, And I take that opportunity to teach them how to behave around large dogs. Also, they meet the older dogs before they meet the puppies. It gives everyone an opportunity to relax, and its easier on the pups. Also, if the kids are not behaving at this point, after they get a lecture from me, they may not even make it to the puppies. If parents cant handle their kids, they have no business adding a puppy to that chaos. Not one of my pups, anyway. Once we had a wife totally freaked out when she met the older dogs, she didn't realize GSD's got that big!! Are you kidding me!! Needless to say, they didn't take a puppy, I didn't care how much the guy wanted the puppy, the wife and kids were obviously terrified. I suggested a Corgi, and they did buy one and called me a bunch of times for tips. They are on their second Corgi and very happy. Win-win. * Ileana * Inquest GSD's, Home of : 2 x Sel EX AM CH & Sel CAN CH Karizma's Cacique of Inquest TC, aka DEXTER Kaleef's Expensive Date (major pointed) aka JACKIE In a message dated 8/23/2011 1:50:43 P.M. Here's the thing, I know the AKC site says "go and see the breeder's facility" and "meet the dogs", but quite frankly, I am busy w/ "real" work during the week, busy w/ family and friends, maybe a dog show etc. during the weekend, and when I do have a moment's peace I LOVE my privacy and I can't stand the thought of people I don't know, didn't invite with (perhaps) ill behaved children who will trash my well cared for NOT CHILDPROOF home? I don't have a kennel...I have a home. AND I love to entertain...but not strangers. AND I don't WAN'T a bunch of strangers coming and going.... Pet peeve of mine, children who can't stand on the two feet God gave them and want to put a foot against the wall or on a cabinet, and oh yes, the dear ones who hang on the cabinets or think they can wander in the house or my fav...the child who threw a dog's ball and hit the freshly painted ceiling (which then needed to be REpainted). Don't get me wrong, not ALL children act like that, but it's all too frequent, and I don't usually have 1/2 a day to spend chatting dogs and playing the entertainer. Now, plenty of times I'll explain that weekends are jam packed and give them my show schedule but when that doesn't work.... ....how do you all handle the requests?
