How I got into Dogs
All my childhood, I wanted a dog. My parents would not allow it. When
I was a senior in High School, my sister (who was in First grade)
brought home a Schnauzer/Beagle Puppy. It wasn't the dog that I
wanted, but it least it was a dog. I remember that the Mother was a
top winner from Westminster who was nailed by the pet next door who
dug under the fence.
When I got my first apartment, I got a German Short Haired Pointer
(without papers - Mr Spok) and a Weimeraner (papered and a litter
sister to Lady Ballerina). Whenever my husband was angry with me, he
took them to the pound while I was at work. Mr Spok the unpapered dog
got put to sleep. Â I vowed to never let that happen again. No dog
that moved into my house would EVER go to rescue or a shelter. Wynsum
Weimeraners was born.
Mr Wiggles turned out to be a great asset to me - he naturally
alerted me to my daughter's seizures. He was my first obedience and
first protection dog. When he was 17 and had to be put to sleep, my
neighbor convinced me to get a German Shepherd female as she had a
male.
Well, Sheena came into our lives and we were convinced to show her.
We took her to Nationals and competed and the bug was so intense that
we got Bear. Bear was not the show dog we had hoped for and she was
shown and ranked in obedience. Wynsum Shepherds was born, over 25
years ago.
Bear was also trained to work as an assistance dog for my daughter. I
volunteered once a week at the local training center for assistance
dogs. Bear worked at Nursing Homes until she retired at age 14. She
marched with the Mummers, was on TV, and did demonstrations on how a
dog trained in bite work could also do therapy.
Bear's daughter D'vash needed a buddy. Â So we got her a Corgi to
share her run.
Since then, my love of the breed has grown. It is the most versatile,
most beautiful breed in the world. While the Corgi appears to be a
GSD on short legs, they are not a GSD. But I can show my own dog and
have fun showing in breed.
The two breeds interact well together, and life is wonderful.
