Hotspots are yeast & bacterial infections. The "old fashioned ear
cleaner/for infections" (the homemade stuff) works excellently, kills yeast
(Better than listerine) is more gentle on the skin, doesn't smell so bad, &
doesn't have artificial colorings and flavors in it.
It is a "go to" at more than one clinic I have worked at as the first line
of hotspot treatment after a thorough hair shaving (clippered is good). A
key to getting them gone is to NOT use any ointments or creams, as they
need to be dried up asap, and clipping the hair at least 1.5cm all around
the spot is important as the nasty bugs live in the hair follicles.
Everyone who tries to save coat on their dog and refuses to allow clipping
ends up with a bigger spot... including myself once when my pup (well now
almost 7y) got wasp stung and chewed the crap out of it to a half dollar
sized spot. It ended up almost 3x the size because I tried to beat the
system!
For those who don't have it, the ear cleaner recipe is:
You will need:
1 pint isopropyl alcohol- the 90% is the way to go
1 pint white vinegar
1 small bottle (1/2 or 1 oz) gentian violet (whatever you can find, and not
a combination product as they often come in
1 quart sized spray/mist bottle (like for plants or household cleaning)
The proportion of alcohol to vinegar is 50%-50% if you choose to make a
smaller batch, but it is easy to use near to a quart in a short time.
Mix the vinegar & alcohol, add 15 drops of gentian violet. Refresh with 3-5
drops of violet if the mix gets a couple weeks old.
Mist the area to saturation, pat with a lint free rag to get clean (repeat
if necessary), and re-saturate and leave to air dry twice daily for 3 days.
The sore should be well dry on/by the third day. Do the same once a day for
up to 4 more days if desired to be sure it has well scabbed over. If it is
not healed by 7 days of treatment, something else is going on (such as a
deep pyoderma).
For infected ears: wipe out nasty gunk with a dry cotton ball then fill the
ear canal with the mix & squish it around using the base of the ear. I
usually then let them shake it out, then wipe the ear/s clean & dry with
cotton balls & swabs for in the crevices. Repeat 1x day for 7 days, then
EOD until ear stays clean.
This is also a very nice ear wash for general use, I also use thus mix post
bathing as the alcohol is self drying, the vinegar adjusts the pH, and the
gentian violet is anti fungal. when I had an ear infection once, I actually
used this same treatment on myself and it was far better than the doctors
visit and systemic antibiotics, and it worked!
