Mom, You can forward this message to your list. People need to know the facts about horse slaughter in the US.To make this dog related Mom raises German Shepherds. Last year, more than 91,000 horses were slaughtered at three horse slaughter plants in the US: one in Fort Worth Texas (Beltex), one in Kauffman Texas (Dallas Crown) and one in DeKalb Illinois (Cavel). All three are foreign owned. Those horses included American wild mustangs. In the '70's, the wild horse protection bill stopped the slaughter of most wild horses. However, Senator Burns from Montana lifted most of those slaughter protection with his last minute rider in the appropriations bill saying any mustang more than 10 years old and any mustang not adopted in three tries could be sold to slaughter. That was in addition to any mustang sold to slaughter with ownership paperwork showing the owner had owned the horse for more than one year. Here's an article about some of those wild horses slaughtered in 2006: _http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20050426/NEWS/104260046&SearchID=73255738 085564_ (http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20050426/NEWS/104260046&SearchID=73255738085564) Horse slaughter remains an issue of ignorance. People don't know and people don't want to admit once they have been told that something so horrible could be going on in this country. The USDA reports weekly the number of horses slaughtered in this country in its weekly slaughter report. If it passes it will also have to be passed by Congress and signed by the Pres. Please let your representatives in the House and Congress know that you do not want American horses slaughtered for people in France, Belgium and Japan to eat. You can also come visit us at _http://cberheadqrters.proboards103.com/index.cgi_ (http://cberheadqrters.proboards103.com/index.cgi) We are doing what we can to adopt horses before they go to the slaughter house and there is alot of information available to learn more about this hidden American tragedy. I myself have adopted 2 horses, and if you think only old, ill and delapidated horses end up going to slaughter, think again. One of my horses is a Registered and Sweepstakes nominated Arabian mare. She just was unfortunate enough to go to the auction when someone decided to "reduce" their herd. My other horse was a rodeo bucking horse who was pregnant when she was sent to slaughter. She had a cute little filly in March. Some people do not realize their horse may end up as a slaughter bound horse when they take them to the auction, but others just want the very last dollar they can get out of their horses. That is why many of them have their manes and tails cut off, so their owner can get money for the horse hair! Some people are just to cheap to have their horse, that has served them for many years, put to sleep when they get to old or sick. It is very sad. We have actually bought some of these old and injured horses so we could humanely euthanize them to spare them the horrible truck ride to the packing plant. If you have any more questions feel free to email me at lorsadoon@xxxxxxxxxxx or go to _www.columbiabasinequinerescue.org_ (http://www.columbiabasinequinerescue.org/) to check out our adoptable horses. There are also stories of the horses we could not save and were sent to a feedlot to be fattened up before they were slaughtered. We can not save them all, but we do what we can to help them, one at a time.
