The article was for shock value. What the article failed to say was that I
had two spayed bitches, a handicapped bitch and one too old to breed plus
quite a few males, and three bitches that had never been bred. The AKC
defines a Hobby Breeder as someone who breeds 50 or less puppies a year and
I have never come close to that. If I ever had that many puppies in a year
I would shoot myself. Every puppy of mine gets individual care and I
couldn't do that with all the puppies some people are talking about. I
don't put my dogs down or find them new homes when they get old they get to
live out their lives in peace and quiet. The people that are saying you
can't judge by the number of dogs you have are correct. I'd actually like
to meet a person who at my level made money selling puppies between c
sections and vet bills taking good care of the dogs. I certainly don't
breed to make money only for quality. I have made quite a few good people
through the puppies. No limit law in my town.

I have not posted on this list for so long because it is not worth getting
into to it with people because we all have different opinions. But my
question to you Sue, is how many dogs make a hobby breeder? There are big
time people in our breed who are hobby breeders and have 17 dogs or more.
Your opinion is different from what other people think a hobby breeder is
and your opinion would put a lot of our greats in the breed as not hobby
breeders. This is what is giving the Animal Rights people a victory time
after time again.

I read the news article sent yesterday.
I am not judging, i say this from experience.
She has, reportedly, 17 German shepherds. If she ls a "hobby" breeder, what
is she doing with 17 dogs?
From where i sit a hobby breeder is one that has a few breeding/show quality
pets that they show and breed along with the Dog's usual family pet
activities...they are breeding for the joy of it (ummmmm puppy breath). They
sell those puppies with the idea to offset some of the costs of having that
litter. (registrations, vaccinations, vet costs etc)
To me, anything else constitutes commercial. If litters are bred and sold to
offset expenses related to maintaining the rest of the dogs - commercial, to
offset travel and show expenses- commercial, to pay vet bills- commercial.
in these examples the breeding/selling is a part time job... NOT a hobby.

That is exactly my point. This sets a dangerous precedent for us dog owners
that live within city limits.
I don't know Danielle, nor know how many dogs, cats, or whatever she has.
All I know is that one disgruntled GSD person has turned on another for who
knows what reason and a judge had decided that he is a god, and the entire
situation stinks to bad justice.
You need to separate yourself from Danielle and her dogs and look at this as
a case decision that can negatively impact you and your dogs.
Even today I have received 6 emails of people telling me she is a puppy
mill, has almost 20 dogs in a very small home, rotates the dogs with her
mother, her dogs are in poor health. Meanwhile I have it from people that
have been to her house and attended the court hearings that none of this is
true.
Why are we doing this to ourselves??
Who needs enemies?
