Improve the breed? Never my goal. I agree with you Sue, 'breeding to improve the breed' that is like saying you are going to go out and change the world! HAHA My goal was to breed the BEST dog that I could. Hmm, let me understand now.. when I worked full time with a salary and was selling puppies and showing, it sounds like that was ok... not commercial. But, when I decided to retire from business and enjoy my life playing with my dogs, selling puppies and doing it full time, then that somehow made it not ok? City Hall has laid it down very clearly what constitutes hobby breeder and commercial business. We are lucky it is not as strict as what is happening here. But, what is stipulated is the size of ones property and the number of dogs which lays out what kind of facility one must have. Neither City Hall nor Government speak the same language. One talks about size of property and number of dogs, the other talks about profits after expenses. To the town, I am a hobby breeder. To the government, I am a hobby breeder. Seems to me, that's both ways. I think that "breeding to improve the breed" is the biggest crock i ever heard, and yes, spouted myself back then.. If that were true then why are the puppies sold for thousands of dollars?? if the intent of the litter was to "improve the breed" then by rights the best ones would be kept and the rest given (or at least sold for what it cost to get that puppy to 8 weeks of age - which is not $2000 no matter how you cut it) to those wonderful families. But no one is debating the "rightness" or "wrongness" of commercial breeders... the issue at hand is people breeding dogs for sale and saying they are only hobbyists - but you can't have it both ways.. you can't earn money to pay the bills and still say it's your hobby.. Again, these are only MY thoughts and opinions.. we are all entitled to them and i am not trying to force anyone to agree, or to convince anyone to see it my way - i am just engaging in a very lively discussion.. and loving it!! I understand that "commercial" breeder is defined differently in every corner of the earth.. and therein lies the problem..everyone is talking apples and oranges depending on where you are having the discussion.. > Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2013 01:48:41 -0700 > From: rockannand@xxxxxxx > To: stormygsd@xxxxxxx > CC: showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; inquestgsd@xxxxxxx; kgsawler@xxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Hobby breeder guilty > > I don't think it is so black and white.
