I am well aware that the gene is not at all similar. Â I simply said that the
folks that made the DQ
THOUGHT it might be a health issue and now we know better. Â BTW I have seen a
true albino
GSD and he was healthy, pretty and good tempered. I have judged white regional
specialties
in conjunction with their national and see that these folks are working very
hard and making
great headway in their breeding programs. Â Still, AKC is not likely to make
them a separate
breed in the next century. Â The Shiloh Shepherd and the King Shepherd consider
themselves
separate breeds, but it we'll have ice in Arabia before AKC recognizes them. LOL

The "white" gene in the GSD is not the same "white" gene seen in the Collie,
Sheltie, Aussie, etc. It is not the same "white" gene seen in the Dobie.Â
Therefore, the "white" GSD has the same health issues as its colored relatives,
and no special health issues just related to the color "white". Â I have been
in white since 1971, and I have never seen, either in person or in picture, an
albino PUREBRED "white" GSD. Yet, people still ask if my BROWN eyed, black
nosed whites are albino????

The understanding of canine genetics has come along way since 1968.  All I
use to hear is how the "white" is going to pale out the rich black and red
coloring of the colored dogs. Well, since the "white" hasn't been allowed
since 1968, how is the paling of rich colors, the large white chests, and
white toes being explained today?

The story I was always told about why the white was DQed -Â Â at one of the
GSDCA Nationals, a white won the obedience top honors. Then, the rush was on
to prevent that from happening again.

At the time that the DQ for white came about, it was thought that white GSDs
carried
a health issue. �Many breeds do have health issues in the color white, and
the
"protectors"
of our breed acted out of concern for that. �Perhaps they were correct in
their
beliefs;
perhaps they were simply going with the findings in other breeds. �In many,
many
breeds there are serious issues with the color white; �Cardigan corgis may
not
have
white surrounding the eyes; white collies must have color on the head; Shelties
must
not be predominately white; �Australian shepherds may not have white body
patches;
Pembrokes may not have white on the ears or body; and on and on. �This is due
to
the�
fact that white on ears and eyes can be associated with deafness and blindness
�as well
as other issues (also true in cats ) and the standards are designed to control
the incidence
of white. �Other issues of color are related to health problems. �In the
Dalmation, spots
are mandatory, while patches are not allowed. �Perhaps the folks making the
rules back�
then were wrong or perhaps the breeders of our white dogs have eliminated those
problems. �Who knows ? �I cannot understand the objection to white GSDs if
that
is the case. �OTOH, if they were to become a separate breed, whites could not
be
bred
to colored dogs; they could if they were varieties. �
