While I was in college in San Antonio, many a year ago now.... one of
the students worked in the film library at Lackland AFB. He would
regularly bring a film back to the dorm to watch. Many were captured
German films, some classified, some not. One of the films was of the
SS Snow troops, who wore white field uniforms, carried white
everything and were accompanied by white GSD's. It was an amazing
sight and, because of my interest in the breed, caught my attention.
While the SS were hardly conformation candidates, they did have a
purpose for the color, apparently with Himler and Hitler's blessing.
Now that is hardly an argument for a purpose within the show ring, but
it did serve a purpose in that setting. I suppose they thought the
color was reason enough.
I suppose all my dogs would be DQed from that setting. They are far
too dark.
