Received a phone call today from a friend named Frank, who lives in Queens,
NY. He related a great story, just had to share. His purchased a puppy from us
several years ago. BTW, THAT is an interesting story, too.
He said his GSD, Rutter (Yes, he named him after my husband), jumped the fence
and ran across the street to the daycare center. He NEVER jumps the fence
'cause he weighs 138 pounds and the fence is 5 ft tall. Besides, he's the
"King" of his own domain, the back yard! Well, he blocked everyone trying to
enter the building by barking madly and jumping up and down, acting like a
moron according to Frank. The police were called, all the neighbors came out
on the street 'cause everyone knows Rutter and were trying to figure out what
was happening, and the next thing that happened...SMOKE began pouring from the
building!

Of course, the fire department was called, the fire contained, and life when on
somewhat normally. After things settled down a bit, they looked around, but
could not find Rutter. He had somehow gotten back over the fence and went
home. Frank has NEVER had him escape from the back yard, except for today. He
doesn't know how he even did it.

All the neighbors contacted Frank to tell him what the neighborhood
self-proclaimed "KING" had done. They said, if the little children had gone
into the home, they would have suffered smoke inhalation. No one would have
known about the fire until possibly too late or worse (don't want to think
about that!). Now Rutter is the new "HERO" of the neighborhood!

It's amazing that this dog had the compunction to escape from an inescapable
back yard, doing something he knew was wrong, but his instincts told him he HAD
to do it, and then he had to figure out WHAT to do to keep people from harm,
and then he had to figure out how to re-enter the back yard. He didn't tell
anybody! He acted like it was his JOB to protect his neighborhood, and he
certainly did!

What a great story about breed!
