[ SHOWGSD-L ] Herding sites

Herding is a LOT more complicated than just having a farm with sheep. If
you go on to the AKC website and search for results of the herding trials that
have taken place at the site near Houston, there are no GSDs and very few
breeds other than border collies that compete and qualify there. Sheep that
are
not used to being worked by "upright" breeds are NOT a good choice for our
national for ANY course (A, B, or C!!). Also, the requirements of C Course
are such that it requires a knowledgeable person to design & maintain the
course as well as condition the flock (which should be separate from the sheep
used for A or B courses). Since there isn't a C course flock available at the
site near Houston, and the people there have mainly border collies trialing on
their place, it leads one to believe that they are not experienced with C
course. I think the Herding Chair & committee made the RIGHT decision to have
herding at a facility (in Dallas) that is already equipped with all 3 courses
AND sheep that are used to be worked by German Shepherds!!!!
Tracking also is more complicated than just having open fields. AKC
requires there to be certain challenges on the tracks. The park in Houston
that is
being used for tracking is the one that is used in the area for ALL of the
tracking tests. You are much more likely to get volunteers to lay tracks (and
you need people who know what they're doing for that!) if you go to a
location that they are familiar with and has been approved in the past for
Tracking
Trials. BTW, there are sites near Dallas that are used for Tracking Trials.
An easy way to find out if a site is approved for both TD & TDX trials is to
go on AKC's website and find out what has been used before!
