In September, 2011, I submitted Harley's blood serum to a Northern California
Institute doing research into TK (Thymidine Kinase) activity seen in dogs with
Hemangiosarcoma, Lymphoma, and/or Leukemia. Positive, elevated TK results are
usually present in these diseases. The name of the study is "Cancer High-Risk
Breed Screening Study."

They are doing continuing research and check back with me routinely to update
Harley's records and keep track of his health. Should he never develop these
diseases, it may help lead to the discovery of a genetic marker. It is
believed, though not proven, that these diseases may have a genetic base.

I am thrilled (and hopeful) to say that they have informed me that Harley,
through testing done on his blood serum, is not considered to have this
activity. I am not a scientist, but, reading all that they have sent to me and
to my Vet, I have very good vibes about this info. Normal TK reading is less
than 5.9. High is 6.0 and over. Harley's test result is 1.4!! Sounds VERY
good, to me!! :-) :-)

This study may, one day, lead to a marker for these diseases. One can only
hope and pray and strongly support these types of research. After all, what is
more important than living with a happy, healthy dog???? Especially one who
just about totally kicked A$$ for almost 8 years in the show ring?? :-) :-)
:-) OK, sorry....it really IS hard not to BRAG!!

Paula, 134 days and counting

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Hemangiosarcoma

Has anyone ever had Hemangiosarcoma in any of your dogs? I'm wondering how
common it is in gsds.
TIA..............
