Hello Michelle
Ive had Hemangiosarcoma in one GSD who died at 9 years of age and also in
one Labrador Retriever who lived another 4 years after surgery at age 11 and
removal of a 5 pound tumour. When my second GSD contracted Lymphoma 5
months later, I started to do a lot of research into cancers and GSDs.
The statistics now are that one in eight GSDs will die from either
Hemangiosarcoma or Lymphosarcoma. Those are just the numbers reported to
OVC and other cancer centers by vets. There are many more who just drop and
die and arent reported. Usually by the time that Hemangiosarcoma symptoms
show, the cancer is too widespread to do other than palliative measures. If
you can catch it before the tumours bleed out, you have a better chance of
survival. The Labrador that survived for four years after the tumour
removal died from a stroke. The only reason that he survived was that an
ultrasound caught sight of the tumour early enough to remove it before it
metastasized to the heart from the spleen. The surgery took 8 hours to
remove all the supporting blood vessels but he was like a puppy afterward.
Needless to say that I will in the future be doing yearly ultrasounds on
both my current GSDs in an effort to avoid the same fate.
