I slept on the sofa a few nights with the pup in the crate beside me. When he/she whimpered, I put my hand out and that seemed to satisfy. It was easy to reach down and pat the pup. If he stirred a lot, then we went out. This really helped with any new pup and he got the message that his crate was the place to sleep. Wasn't long b/4 the pup was sleeping through the night. As soon as I would hear him stir even in the early hours, we went out and then back to bed awhile. They get used to routine pretty fast. (My husband won't allow a dog in the bedroom as he is a light sleeper and doesn't want the dog hair.) They are quite comfortable elsewhere sleeping as they have nice beds are used to it.
