Is this the first time this dog has been around children? I agree that it
sounds more like fear and as harsh as it sounds any dog that snaps at a child
is gone in my book. That dog is a tragedy waiting to happen whether it bites
this time or not it will bite eventually if pushed and a child could be the
receipient and a lot of damage could be done. Just a moment when the dog is
not fully being supervised that is all it takes. Or gets loose and is scared
its a loose canon on the run.
I guess I feel so strongly because my grandchild was bit in the face when she
was a 18 months (by a sitter's dog, who should have known better). It wasn't
pretty.

he fact that the dog is retreating under the table (somewhere covered, and
ot easily accessible) screams avoidance behavior to me, as does the
haking mentioned.
Yes, she could be "guarding" her favorite person, and she may view that
erson as a valuable resource, but she's trying to retreat somewhere
ecluded. If she really wanted to bite, she'd have done so already. What
he is doing is a lot of bluffing, and trying to get people out of her
omfort zone.
I do not know how the table is set up (against a wall or not), but if she's
rammed herself under a table where chairs are present, and the space is
locked off, she may have felt snapping at the toddler was her only
ption. If I read correctly, the bitch did not connect with the child, so
he did show bite inhibition.
I personally agree with Kathy in this instance, and would recommend she be
ehomed to an adult only home, or a home with older children (13-14+), and
he dog should have an experienced owner either way. I'd also suggest a
ehaviorist, rather than a plain old trainer. Get to the root of the issue.
Wish I could have seen the whole behavior myself, but, as I said, sounds
ore like fear aggression than dominance.
