I have two signs on my front gate:
1. STOP - DOGS IN YARD
2. BAD DOG (required by the state of Florrida to avoid liability to someone
over 6 years of age).
767.04. Dog owner's liability for damages to persons bitten
The owner of any dog that bites any person while such person is on or in a
public place, or lawfully on or in a private place, including the property
of the owner of the dog, is liable for damages suffered by persons bitten,
regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owners' knowledge of
such viciousness. However, any negligence on the part of the person bitten
that is a proximate cause of the biting incident reduces the liability of
the owner of the dog by the percentage that the bitten person's negligence
contributed to the biting incident. A person is lawfully upon private
property of such owner within the meaning of this act when the person is on
such property in the performance of any duty imposed upon him or her by the
laws of this state or by the laws or postal regulations of the United
States, or when the person is on such property upon invitation, expressed or
implied, of the owner. However, the owner is not liable, except as to a
person under the age of
6, or unless the damages are proximately caused by a negligent act or
omission of the owner, if at the time of any such injury the owner had
displayed in a prominent place on his or her premises a sign easily readable
including the words "Bad Dog." The remedy provided by this section is in
addition to and cumulative with any other remedy provided by statute or
common law.

I have been told by various people including Insurance agents that it is
not a good idea to put up a sign that reads "Beware of Dog" or any dog
related "warning" sign. I was told that it was okay to put up an
"informational"
sign indicating that there were dogs on the property but not to use the
ware BEWARE or DANGEROUS or GUARD all of which could be construed to be
taken
as a warning of known consequences. I have a sign that I purchased at a
dog show and it simply states: "STOP: Dogs loose in yard". I was informed
that was an acceptable "informational" sign and it did not constitute a
"warning" of knowledge of danger.

Our K-9 Ofc. said I should be displaying a sign on my house/fence "Beware
of
Dog." But I always thought if you did that then you are telling the
public/friends/enemies you have an issue or possible issue to be aware of
your dog/s. Now if you have a sign "Beware of Guard Dog" that's more
serious. I was told then you know your dog WILL or CAN bite if threatened.
Then if taken to court you can be fined or whatever comes with that because
you KNEW of a possible issue with your dog/s because of the warning sign.
Hey, what's the right thing to do. How many people have warning signs? I
know a lot of people that put up those signs & don't have dogs. It
possibly
a great deterrence for bad people. And we sure have enough of them. Kathy
