We have a VERY sick dog and need advice/suggestions ASAP. The vets are out of ideas. This is a 6 year old male neutered GSD. Saturday night, he is perfectly normal. Eats dinner. A couple of hours later, goes out with his owner to play ball for about 30 minutes. Routine behavior. No problems outside. About an hour and a half after coming inside, the dog starts to froth at the mouth and acts lethargic. He is taken to a local vet. Temperature is 107.4. Dog begins to seize. Has two grand mal seizures, despite valium. Dog is taken to an emergency clinic. Admitted and given phenobarbital. Seizures stop. Temperature is still 107. They give him an ice bath and get the temp down to 105. Blood work is all normal - liver, pancreas, etc - nothing unusual. Slightly elevated white blood cell count. Sunday morning, temperature still 105. Dog is still lethargic, not responsive to owners. Cannot walk on his own. Has not urinated. Urine culture is negative. Lyme test is negative. Sunday afternoon, they decide to start an antibiotic. By Sunday night, temp is down to 103. Dog urinates, eats some baby food and tries to move around on his own. This morning, temp is 103.5. Dog is responsive to owners and is still trying to move around. Seems to not have control of his hind end - exceedingly weak. Owners say the dog seems much more comfortable today. He is able to rest. Before this, he had been agitated, as though he didn't know where he was. Vets suspect dog could not see due to high temp. Vets just called and they are switching his antibiotics to see if they can get the temperature down more. Owners say they can only afford one more week at the clinic. It's $250 a day before treatment. Possible ideas so far are a circulating mast cell tumor or a brain tumor. Another idea is a toxin. Tox screen was negative, but who knows if he ate a mushroom or something. ANY OTHER IDEAS??????? Becky T.
