What is the doses for vitamin E and selenium? Since these 2 are not water soluble its kinda important to keep within a safe range. Thank you! In My experience, the ones that get soft are often ones with Longer pasterns, not necessarily bigger boned. And or looser ligamented than others? Hard to say but all but 1 of mine that had gone soft, (in two cases flat) came back up fine with Science Diet old dog, Vit, C, E, & Seliniam(SP?) And I only do that long enough to get pasterns up. The two I had that went completely flat (one of which never had good pasterns) were out of the same bitch but different sires. Deb In a message dated 11/9/2013 7:50:51 A.M. This is new to me. Had it once before years ago...but it DID come down through that bloodline...and those come back up quickly. Before Vets started backing off on vaccines...we always gave the 3rd shot right on time also and never really saw it affect pasterns. But this was so 'dramatic'..in two days. Also, I know it seems to me the Ft. Dodge vaccine has changed.....at least the packaging has. In general...our pups are raised in the yard...a big open area with lots of grass, gravel and of course some sidewalks. They are confined at night on hard dirt with pine shavings....or crated. They play too hard to get fat..and we do feed a low protein dog food. In general...we don't see the problem. It's just odd to me to suddenly get 'hit' with this on one puppy...and he is not a big heavy bone big puppy....and no...he does not circle around in the pen in the same direction...he is loose in the yard most of the time. It's not horrific....just a little difference.....but it's there. Carolyn marhaven@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.marhaven.com From: Pinehillgsds@xxxxxxx [mailto:Pinehillgsds@xxxxxxx] Subject: Re: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Health questions/ this List I wouldn't blame the vaccine. I vaccinate at 6-8-10-12 and 1 vaccine after 16 weeks. Yeah I know that sounds like a lot, we have rescues locally bringing in dogs from all over and counties that haven't ever had a problem w/ parvo and/or distemper now are having horrible problems. Coupled w/ the "less is more" mentality and knowing breeders who have lost puppies to parvo after sending them home w/ only 1 shot and before the next was due....well, I'm not smart enough to know when maternal immunity actually ends for each and every puppy so I'm not taking a chance. So re downed pasterns, you see it sometimes in certain lines and I keep puppies lean and off puppy food quickly. Especially the heavily boned puppies. And boy...if I see a hint, I reduce protein. (Add grain, cook up some rice or barley). Sand can strengthen ligamentation and may help w/ pasterns. Maybe worth making one of the kennel runs sand? But, depends on age too. I don't know what the age cut off for being able to improve is... Could also be the length of the pastern... Funny story, not "funny" but...at a show a while back sitting next to a judge, he catches my eye and points to his left wrist. I look at my watch and tell him the time. Happens again. I again tell him the time. No...that's not what he meant, I was supposed to notice so and so's pasterns. I don't blame the bitch...and I can't say I blame the stud...but I do wonder about things when something just POPS UP. <G> Normally we wait an extra month before we give the third vaccine to our pups. But we gave them their vaccine 'on time'..a few days after 12 weeks. Something we normally don't do...but were taking them to a Match. The pasterns were DOWN in two days! This pup has pretty much corrected except one pastern is still softer or still a tad more down. It is odd to me....and I wonder about other Breeds. Some breeds have terrible pasterns anyway...i.e., Bassetts, Doxies, Bull Dogs...so I just wonder if other breeds actually do develop 'down' pasterns like some of our Shepherds do. And why "some" and not others....? Someone mentioned their Vet is seeing it now even in horses. Horses also have angulated pasterns compared to say....a Terrier. Our Vet years ago said it was too high powered dog food with lots of "nutritional" stuff added for growth...because of marketing they all brag about all their "extra" ingredients. <G> SO...we've always been careful about pups not getting too fat...and a diet not too high in fat or protein...etc. Now this pup.... Carolyn marhaven@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.marhaven.com On Behalf Of Norma Ramey Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Health questions/ this List It wasn't until after Ed had gone to the Vet with his guy, that I remembered another leg problem - it is called, in general PANO and is actually - sp.? PANOSTITIS or something like that. I DO know and told Ed that usually the down pasterns are due to a selenium deficiency. There is a special formula for feeding for about a month or two and very light exercising during the time. Also, I know they will also suggest wrapping the area and put some nasty tasting thingy there so the dog does not chew the wraps. I just do not remember much about the pano as I do not think I had it ever, but the down pasterns did show up in ONLY ONE DOG in my 41 years of breeding. It can't possibly be inherited since I do not ever knowing of it being from one generation to the next or more than just one pup in alitter. We are ALL DIFFERENT in what happens and the insides of these particular ones just do not seem to be able to handle what their siblings or parents do. I rescued and boarded MANY and now you mention it, I do not ever know of such leg problems in other breeds, tho there may be, in fact some stuff worse too.Oh, in your inquiry, I must say --- being a BITCH myself, not all bad things come from them, a lot is from the STUD --- unless the bitch you are talking about herewas bred to the same male 3 times, she isn't the real culprit, in my humble opinion. I think environment and the individual's reaction to things really should COUNT! Yes yes yes --- Da List IS Da Best! Ed Hill posted about a pup he had with one bad pastern. For the first time in many many years we have a pup with ONE pastern a tad lower than the other..similar to Ed's pup I guess. Ed...you never said what Dietary changes the Vets at UCD advised you to use....and why. Hope you are willing to share? But I am wondering about this strange thing that some GSD pups go through with pasterns. Does this happen to OTHER BREEDS? Is this a GSD problem only because of angulated pasterns? IS it dietary in the opinion of breeders...as UCD suggested to Ed when the tests showed nothing else? IS it genetic? WHY in a litter of normal pasterns does one go down..especially from a bitch that never produced them before in 3 other litters. This List is usually GREAT about sharing about health issues.
