Dear Caring Friend,
Max is a dog with a particularly tragic past that has cost him a great deal of
suffering. Six weeks ago that changed when he was rescued and has been given
excellent medical care and love from rescue volunteers and a terrific trainer.
Max has learned to trust again and is ready for a forever home or even a
foster. This is his story:
Max was in the process of being dumped at the Carson Shelter when a rescuer
spotted him on her way out of the shelter with another dog she had just saved.
She couldn't help but notice Max since he is a large, stunning purebred German
Shepherd . His prior owners (don't deserve to be called guardians) had him
spend his entire life in their backyard on a chain on a concrete pad . . . day
and night, rain or shine, whether hot or cold. Max had NEVER been out of the
yard for a walk, taken to a park, taught to play fetch, allowed to play with
other dogs. Essentially, Max was denied most everything that a dog needs and
deserves. His former owners weren't at all embarrassed or ashamed to admit this
to the rescuer. They were simply indifferent. A worst kind of cruelty.
They bought this purebred German Shepherd just to make a chained prisoner.
Then they were moving and discarding him like a piece of old furniture.
Max was very sick from a poor diet and stress, and had protruding ribs and hip
bones. Max had a very painful untreated anal abscess. Max weighed in at 60
pounds when he should weigh 85-90 pounds! The rescuer who spotted him knew his
fate at the county pound and couldn't bear to see him end his life this way.
She contacted us for help. We took him in.
Max now weighs 73 pounds and counting, his abscess is healed and he is on an
excellent diet and medication to help soothe his inflammatory bowel condition
and allow his body to absorb all the nutrients in the food he eats. He is being
cared for at the best Critical Care Hospital in Los Angeles and is now ready to
go to a foster home. His medical bill has topped $5,000.
Behaviorally, Max has made a 180-degree turn around from the time he was first
rescued. He is responsive to training, learning how to walk on leash, will sit
and give his paw to you. He will roll over on his back for a belly rub. Max
loves women! He is very responsive and trusts women. But is still nervous
around some men (could be from prior abuse). With a stable home environment and
good training which we will continue providing, he will prove to be your most
loyal companion. He puts his face on your legs with a big smile and plays
silly, as if he's trying to experience the puppyhood which he totally missed
out.
Most importantly, Max needs a foster home in the interim until his forever home
will be found, which we're diligently seeking everyday. Please let us know if
anyone would step up to the plate to help Max start his new life.
