Handlers charge what people are willing to pay. And that's ok, if you can
afford it. I remember a few years ago someone taking a second mortgage to
campaign their special for a year....I thought she was NUTS!
So, if you get charged those over the top prices, dont bitch, you agreed to
it. If the handler cant be bothered to call you back, or springs new
charges on the bill, get another handler.
I dont understand why people think they are being held hostage. Oh, Yeah!
because they want a face!!! That's the difference. Dont want to pay for
a bonus?? Hire another handler! I just dont get the bitching, is a free
country, you can hire anyone you want.....oh, but you want a FACE!!
Then, lets not forget, the handlers that want a deposit on their
commitments, because so many clients dont pay their bills. And they ruin it
for the
rest of the exhibitors. I know a handler with over $5000 due from a pair
of clients. Not cool, people, not cool.
We have used Tachi, Alex, Bill, Greg, Olivia, Leslie, Sylvain, CJ, Kent,
Jim, and I may be forgetting someone. We learned from Greg to pay for the
handling fees at the show, and he billed the expenses. It made a lot of
sense, and I try to remember to bring my check book every time. Honest, I had
handlers who have a LIFE....imagine that....and forget to bill for a while,
so I pay the handling fee, and when they get around to bill expenses is no
big deal, and usually not a big bill anyway.
Not all handlers are bad, nor are they all professionals. I remember one
trying to strong arm me to keep my dogs with them.....I kept all the emails
that addressed their poor business practices, and I moved on. Because I
decide where my dogs go, and who goes with my dogs, not the other way around.

Having said that, I have witness handlers taking great care of the animals
they have with them at show weekends, its a whole day adventure, and in my
book, they dont get paid enough for all that. Especially, when the owners
are at the show acting like royalty. Charge away!!
Sometimes you have to change handlers, because the situation requires it.
Then you get the handlers acting like this is a personal attack!! Its
business, not personal, why is that so hard to understand, I dont get it...but
they will badmouth the clients with no basis....if they can get an
audience, they have an act!!
I love it when the handlers says "why you fired me, I thought we were
friends"....oh yeah, you were my friend when you couldn't return a call? you
were a friend when you double booked my class? you were my friend when you
overcharged me? Who needs enemies!!! LOL! Not my personal experience, mind
you, but certainly the experience of many, some close to me.
I have also witness handlers showing their own dogs against their clients
dogs. Talk about a conflict of interest. Then they dont have enough time
to get their clients dogs ready, but still charge for those services.
Really? ....and we wonder why there is a decline in entries?
I think its an ego created situation. No one else to blame.
We have been blesses with 99% good experience with those handlers with have
worked with. 99% are still friends, some we consider family, one actually
is...<G>
This is supposed to be fun. You are in the driving seat...or should be.
