It's common today to have a veterinary referral when seeing a specialists or going to an ER. In any event, those types of vets do ask for info on the treating veterinarian and they usually fax something to their office. Case in point, I had something small and benign removed from a dog by a surgeon I know & trust associated w/ a large specialty practice (they don't do rabies etc., just specialty stuff.) Great gal. The front desk asked me for the referring vet. Rather than go through a long explanation that I referred myself, I gave them my house call vet's name. Sure enough, she called that night to follow up on a dog she'd never met <G>.
