Subject: Glendale, CA Removes Protection for Local Breeders

Dear AKC Delegates, Judges, Club Officers and Breeders,

Please share this information with any club members who live in the
Glendale area.

The Glendale City Council will be considering an ordinance to prohibit
the sale of dogs and cats in retail pet stores at the August
23rdmeeting. The original draft of the ordinance contained a specific
and clear exemption for local breeders who are selling animals they
bred and reared on their premises.

The proposal only prohibits the sale of dogs and cats from retail pet
stores, defined as a “retail establishment open to the public
andengaging in the business of offering for sale and/or selling
animals at retail.” As hobby breeders generally sell animals from
their private residences, we do not believe this will impact them.

However, we believe that a restoration of the initial exemption is the
best way for the city council to demonstrate that they support local,
responsible breeders who raise healthy, well cared-for dogs and work
to ensure that puppies are placed with responsible owners.

Local breeders are in a unique position to support new pet owners and
exemplify responsible animal ownership. They frequently counsel new
pet owners about choosing the correct breed for their lifestyle,
obedience training and housebreaking. The resource that these breeders
provide decreases the chances that these animals will end up at a
shelter and improves animal control in the community.

AKC encourages Glendale residents and concerned dog owners and
breeders to ask the mayor and city council to restore this exemption
and protect responsible breeders.
