Giardia is very common here (Alberta). I think every dog we have had has picked it up at some point in their lives, but we do go hiking and camping regularly too so it is no surprise. A course of Flagyl is all that's usually needed in an otherwise healthy dog, soft stools may take a few days to a week after finishing to return completely to normal. However our old guy would get recurrent attacks until we treated with Panacur (Two 3 day treatments two weeks apart, as per worming). I've tried the Giardia vaccine also... it does not seem prevent an infection but it does seem to reduce the severity of it when they do get it.
