I would say you need to address that question to AKC since there will no
one on this list that answer that question. AKC makes their own rules and we
as judges must abide by their rules.

Could someone explain please why using a wicket would be a problem when it
is in fact a fault for a GSD to be too large or small, with the standard
calling for our ideal as 22-24" at the withers for bitches and 24-26" for
males (and any deviation from the standard being a fault)? Why must it be
an actual DQ to be allowed by AKC?
Of course, experienced GSD judges may be very good at eyeballing and seeing
significant deviations from standard height in an individual, and observing
it in comparison within a class. So this asked more out of curiosity about
AKC objections to things. . . .
Coincidentally, at a recent show a favorite GSD person of mine, a judge --
but not at this particular show -- commented while observing "Some of our
bitches are getting too large. We need to keep an eye on that." Another
judge commented preferring really large, even oversized bitches, which
would seem, to me at least, not terribly consistent with judging according
to the standard.
It's just one aspect of our standard, but still there, and if a GSD is
wildly outside the height standard ranges . . . why wouldn't this be
permitted to be assessed beyond pure eyeballing by AKC?
