I am German - so, German commands come easy to me. Guess what, I taught my
"kids" the English version - worked for me! LOL

Pretentious is sure true for many owners. I remember training a class and
the first night this couple came in with 2 GSDs...prong collars, the
works...and started barking their German commands like they were hot
stuff....people just stared and rolled their eyes..no one was impressed and
they just looked stupid. When I worked for Jane Steffenhagen, I spoke
German to all of the dogs because they had either been born over there or
had been trained over there and it just seemed right. Truth be told, they
would have most likely obeyed anything I said in any language...lol.

We all understand what you mean Jackie it's just some don't agree. (Just
to be clear, I'm in that camp.)
You can use "come" if you want a general "come here, but no hurry and not
in a direct line" and "front" in the OB ring. See???? Same language. Or
you can use the same command with a different tone/inflection and get
different results.
My dogs are smart enough to know "lie down" when I am eating dinner means
"no begging, they should lie down, but it's just fine to dilly-dally and get
a comfortable spot" and "down" as a drop command in the OB ring.
They are also smart enough to obey hand signals which has nothing at all to
do with language lol.
I'm with Iza, speaking German to a dog here just sounds pretentious.
Should the Collie people speak Scottish???? <G>

The point is the behaviors I'm asking for are NOT the same. Different
words
mean different things.
Saying down and having the dog sit and then lie down is NOT the same as
saying platz and having the dog fold back into a sphynx position. I'm
asking for my dog to use its body in a different way.
Saying down and being ok with my dog doing a sit then going into a down one
minute, and then correcting them for it the next (i.e. "No, I want you to
fold backwards") muddies the waters for the dog, and makes the results
inconsistent, because the dog doesn't understand what I want.
I could say "Squash!" for the dog to come sit square in front of me if
that's what I wanted it to mean. I won't use "come" when I'm asking for
two
different behaviors. Come has never meant "sit in front of me" for the
dogs. I'm not going to tell them to come in an obedience ring and expect
them to sit in front...that's not what I've taught them come means.
We use English at home for the laid back setting, and German for the
obedience ring so I can get the behaviors I want in the right setting.
Dogs generalize behaviors, but not all of them, and it is important to be
as
clear as possible to the dog.
