Re. testing a bitch prior to breeding...
There's a lab called HealthGene which offers a DNA profile called the
"Canine Lost Pregnancy Profile" which includes DNA tests for
abortion-related pathogens (Brucella canis, Staphylococcus aureus,
Sterptociccus spp, Mycoplasma spp., Ureaplasma spp., Canine herpesvirus,
Chlamydophila spp.).
They also offer a DNA profile for the stud. It's called the "Canine Semen
Profile" (Brucella canis, Mycoplasma spp., Ureaplasma spp., Chlamydophila
spp., Canine herpesvirus, Leptospira spp.).
They offer other infectious DNA testing profiles as well -- such as the
"Animal Fungal Profile" and the "Animal Diarrhea Profile."
I wish I had been aware of the Fungal Profile a couple years ago because one
of my dogs was diagnosed with Lymphoma when he actually had Blastomycosis.
He was given Prednisone and died 48 hours later. Steroids should never be
given to a dog with a systemic fungal infection!

BTW, I'm not endorsing HeathGene. I don't know anything about this lab -- I
just ran across it one day while researching genetic testing.
