[ SHOWGSD-L ] Gemutlichkeit

The German Grossmutter taught many lessons in my neighborhood when I was a
little girl so very long ago.
Some of the Kinder on my block did not always get along well.
And sometimes the Kindergarten teacher at school would tell some of the
parents (including mine) that sometimes their Wunderkind didn't play well with
others.....that they were sometimes critical of their classmates' art work.
And sometimes in the summer, when die Grossmutter heard the Kinder outside
being somewhat confrontational with one another, she would come right out the
kitchen door into the yard and shout to us playing on the swing set:
"Gemutlichkeit ! Gemutlichkeit ! You Kinder must be Gemutlich while you play."
(Only she said the word "Gemutlichkeit" with the umlaut over the letter "u".)
We did stop to listen to a few more sentences in German which we did not
understand.
Even the German Shepherd Dogs in the back yard stopped to listen when
Grossmutter came out of the kitchen door in her apron and waving a spoon.
"What's Gemutlichkeit, Grossmutter ?" we all asked.
"No Apfelkuchen for you Kinder unless you are Gemutlich," she answered. "It's
the same as what your Kindergarten teacher says about you sometimes, except the
opposite."
Sometimes die Grossmutter could be a little puzzling to me and my friends. But
we did get the idea.
Being Gemutlich, with an umlaut, is always better than challenging your
classmate's artwork.
