> It's a sad commentary on our wonderful breed. Or a sad commentary on the perceptions of the program.... Since 1957 we donated one puppy from every litter to Guide Dogs and never had one 'fall out' of the program. But alas, as the program changed (not necessarily a bad thing) we discontinued our donations. But that was a long time ago, in the early 70's. Here's why... > "These are dogs that are active, vocal and often have a hard time adjusting to a kennel environment. Staff resources must be focused on managing a small number of dogs to provide a quality of life that meets our high standards of care. General traits of the breed including high energy, tendencies toward protectiveness, and prey drive contribute to their complexities of success as a Guide Dog or as a pet." DUH! They have not changed that much it seems to me! It is OK that the program has changed, and 'Staff resources" may not be adequate to give them the time and energy they need, but don't blame the breed. And when I am old and need one, please give me the love and protection of an active real dog!
