Vicki writes: " But the country of origin of a dog is not defining. Good dogs/bad dogs from ALL countries. The truth is, in my opinion, a GSD with the kind of temperament that I personally like for what I do is not suitable for 90% of the pet buyers. And it is not because they are aggressive. It is because they are brimming over with working ability and drive to do. My dogs have an off switch and are pleasant companions and socially very acceptable. But it is because they get a lot of mental and physical stimulation. Lots of exercise, lots of training, lots of work. And because their genetic makeup is stable with inherited good character." Vicki, this is so true. I'd like to add one thing; pet people often call us wanting a big black&RED dog or puppy. That's all they want in a GSD. We will not sell to someone like this whose only criteria for buying a GSD is its color and size; however, there are plenty of BYBs/unscrupulous breeders who cater to this type of prospective buyer. They also reel them in with the "outstanding" or "Champion" German pedigrees. All too often, there's perhaps a couple "V-rated" dogs in that 4 or 5 generation "Champion German" pedigree. It doesn't matter because the prospective buyer has already "drunk the Kool Aid." How to stop these dogs from ending up in shelters, I really don't have a clue. I wish I did... From Vicki.. In my opinion the issue with GSDs in rescue, temperament, home suitability, etc. is many faceted and many pronged. The first thing we need to realize is that GSDs were NEVER developed as a breed to be pets. They were developed first as a herding dog and as time went on, a multi purpose working dog. Dogs with proper working temperament may or may not be pleasant family pets. It depends on the family. But most GSDs with good drives, energy for the work, and confident outgoing character are not going to be happy stuck in a back yard, crated in an apartment all day, or left alone and unsupervised for 15 hours a day. I judge a fair number of shows and I see way too much poor temperament in the ring. I am also involved with working and performance events and I see some dogs in those arenas who are way too drivey and pushy for most pet owners. And rescue has it's own issues. Not all dogs need to be rehomed. Some simply are not healthy enough or mentally stable enough for pet homes. And some (not all, I am sure) rescues are so over the top with their requirements that is almost impossible to adopt from them. I had first hand experience with a no-kill shelter here. I work with an obedience facility. We take dogs in and put some training on them to make them easier to place. We got in a mixed breed dog that had issues. He was toy crazy and extremely possessive of his toys. He was a fabulous candidate for search and rescue. A individual who does high quality SAR work with many confirmed successes in her resume wanted to adopt him. This person has put Utility titles on her dogs. She runs titers on her dogs and does NOT follow the vaccination protocol this organization espouses. She has affidavits from her vet to this effect as well as their glowing recommendation. She was deemed not suitable because of her vaccination records, she had a multi dog household, and was told she had to sign a contract that the organization had the right to take the dog back at any time if they deeemed it appropriate. This is a high quality dog person who does it ALL right. She could not adopt this dog. As far as I know, he is still sitting in the shelter. I know this is not the case with all rescue. But my point is, there are many issues facing us now and it is difficult to paint the problems with one broad brush. I can quantify more issues to be addressed than I can anwers or methods for dealing with the problems. But the country of origin of a dog is not defining. Good dogs/bad dogs from ALL countries.
