I see another Club possibly folding.....and I honestly do not know what the
Parent Club can
do about this problem. They cannot 'force' interest in a local Club!?
They cannot force
membership and they cannot force educational meetings and training classes??
Particularly
when no one wants to belong to an Organization unless it does "something" for
them even
on a local lever.
I do believe if we need something specific from our Board or Parent Club we
should contact
them and ask.........and see what the reaction is before we blame them for our
own problems
or dissatisfaction.
On the other hand......I will never understand why a dog Club needs 19 Board
members when
we can often not even pull an entry of 19 at a DOG SHOW!!?? An easy expense
to solve!!

One specific thing I have mentioned before that I believe the Parent Club CAN
do that may not
help us.....but may better help us to understand problems and be able to help
with ideas or input
when we cry out for a National in our own areas.
I would LOVE to see the Treasurer's Report have a specific report on ALL
expenses and income
for our National......ALL.......from sheep to sod to seating. A complete
separate report....of
every little detail.
I think if we want to see more Ads in the Review and more dogs and
Articles.....we have to run the
Ads and submit the articles and show the dogs. <G> Until Ads are more
reasonable......the Ads
just won't happen from most of us........$450 for one page.......$450 for a
show weekend to try to
finish a dog...........HMMMMMmmmmmmm .........<G>

Evan points out some very valid points that I have to agree with.
For a board that intended to be more inclusive to the membership,
unfortunately, on the large scale, has not happened. Somewhat dissapointing,
especially with the quality board members that are on the board now.
I do understand having to save money, every company and business is doing
that, from multi million
corporations to the small business in Smallville USA. So I get the conference
call aspects, certainly a good
quick way to get timely issues addressed.
What would be fantastic to see is the board addressing the Regional Club
issues and involving the Regional Clubs more.
But, for right now, I do feel the same as Evan, my membership supports the
American German Shepherd Dog and the much talked about Futurity System. Good or
bad, I don't want to see it go away, so if my $8/month helps keep that alive,
so be it.
Hopefully the future of the GSDCA and the American German Shepherd Dog will
look brighter soon!

I am glad to see Mike return, but he points out two problems. The first being
if the
membership application isn't on the parent club cite, it should be.
More so, I noticed his comment about how "the membership benefited me". I
have had that thought often, and my response is that I belong because I
think my membership benefits the breed. I don't get a lot from our parent
club any more. I no longer care much about awards, I sure didn't enjoy
sitting 8 hours at a board meeting with no chance to give any imput. I now
see
now board meetings are to be held by conference call or internet with no
ability for the club members to even watch. We no longer can vote at the
annual meeting, and while some times there are comments, it sure doesn't feel
like anyone listens.
I find it too expensive to show at the national, and the Review is getting
smaller and smaller with no articles to learn from. The magazine is still
quality, but the content sucks. I read the Review in one short session,
and mostly look for my own dogs.
So, it is not what I get from my membership, but rather what I give. I help
support the club that protects our standard, contributes to research to
protect our breed, provides a central organization to receive information and
complaints about the future of our breed, and represents the German
shepherd in the United States and throughout the world as the voice of the
American German shepherd. I do so because of my love of the breed, and my
desire
to help establish the German shepherd as a premier dog in the world. In
America, it is the GSDCA that allows me to do that.
That is enough for me to send in $8.00 a month or so, and I will not wait
for the club to do anything for me.
Maybe I have too strong a memory of JFK, but to me, I am a member of the
GSDCA because I believe in it.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
