Wouldn't we rather rescue a dog that turns out to be a mix than miss a true PB
that is in a shelter - most of these dogs are pulled based on a picture -
usually not a good picture .? The list changes daily, some times hourly
and?often you only have hours to set up the pull and transportation on a given
dog.? To me - LHSH does a fantastic job at staying on top of the potential pull
list - sometimes I wonder how they have time to do anything else - it can take
multiple phone calls to arrange a pull with a shelter, someone to pull and
someone to transport -
As to numbers - I looked at petfinder this am and just in the GA and SC area -
and only in kill shelters - and only looking at PB - I found:
20 GSD's
?? of those - 2 are white GSD's
?????????????????
?????????????????3 are puppies
??????????????? 18 of these (including the 3 puppies) are in GA - (where often
the shelters have no food for the dogs)?
???????????????? 2 are in SC??
???????????????
At least one of the dogs in GA is listed with AKC papers . .??
I agree that when you look at petfinder it makes you believe that shelter
personnel are breed identification challenged - but for many of the shelters
they probably don't spend more than 2 minutes a dog trying to figure it out . .
Both of my local shelters claim to handle about 18,000 dogs a year - so that is
1,500 dogs a month or 50 dogs a day or 5 dogs an hour - so that is a max of 12
minutes a dog - and of course that doesn't even consider that they take in A
LOT of cats - and other animals . . .
I for one am not so concerned in how they count them as how they save them -
and they do - and they do a fantastic job - we as shepherd breeders/lovers are
so fortunate to have such a dedicated group leading the rescue charge for us!!!!

Gee...I must have been labouring under the delusion that ALL dogs were of
concern to responsible breeders...
gee, how altrusitic I must be!
On the other hand, I do know that part of the reason we are having to
face all this stinking anti-dog legislation is because there are people out
there who STILL say "Oh, it isn't MY breed."
How limited is your vision, anyway?
