I have heard that Bitter Apple will help, also Arid Extra Dry.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] GSD biting tail raw
I have a rescue dog that I have had for three or four weeks now. He had a
spot about 5 inches on his tail that was totally raw from biting it when I
got him. The former owners lived in an appartment, and I am beginning to
think that it was lack of work for him to do that got him started ont his.
. I took him to my vet who gave him cortizone and then gave met medol and
cephalexing to give him twice a day, which I have done religiously. I also
sprayed it several times a day with a spray I got from the vet. Nothing
helped, so I bandaged the tail, but he would rip it off when I wasn't
looking. Then I put an Elizabethan collar on him and tht helped a bit, but
the collar was old and the plastic brittle, so it cracked. I have found
that a a bit of NuStock worked better than the spray, but he still keeps
ripping the bandages off after a while. If I can catch him at it and tell
him to leave it, he does, but only until I'm no longer there. Any
advice? This is driving me batty. He is a very nice dog, and I am
beginning to think that he started this whole thing out of boredom. I have
him in the house so I can keep an eye on him, and he gets out frequently
into my fenced yard. I play with lhim whenever I have the time--he is
absolutely ball driven--but I can't do that all the time because I have lots
of other work to do around here.--
