Lee just took a giant step toward liberation..! AOL is a great way to
get started and comfortable using email and the Internet, but a lot of
people eventually decide to try for more performance.

I never understood what I wasn't getting on AOL until I tried a
different company. The thing that caused me to try was that I at times
saw answers to questions without ever having seen the questions - this
clued me to the fact that I was missing posts.

None of the Internet services are perfect by any means, all have their
frustrations and tech issues. But, AOL is a whole different situation..
And as Lee says, their tech support is incredibly frustrating. When I
have tech issues with Bellsouth (and I definitely do), I speak to real
humans, who are not reading preprinted scripts or sending me boilerplate
emails. I remember one Bellsouth guy who spent literally hours on the
phone with me late at night, troubleshooting a very weird problem. I
really needed resolution, and he persisted until he resolved it !

For those of you who find AOL to be just fine, by all means keep using
it. But, if you are frustrated, try something else. Don't get rid of
AOL unless you are satisfied and comfortable with the other service, but
if you try another provider, you may have a very eye-opening experience.
Many people find a huge difference in their email. And, as for browsing
the Internet, the AOL browser is terrible - many web sites just don't
work with it ! I don't know the technical reasons why this is so, but
it is a fact. My mother-in-law has AOL. When we go to visit her, if I
need to do something online, I log on via AOL (since that is the only
way from her computer) then minimize AOL and use Internet Explorer - it
works when AOL does not. Even if you decide to keep AOL, you can
still do that - log on via AOL, then go to Internet Explorer - you can
get a free webmail account via Yahoo, or Hotmail, or Google (G-Mail),
and experiment with other kinds of email. Webmail is slower and more
cumbersome than email that downloads to your computer via an email
program (client) like Outlook Express (which is given to you for free
with most computers and by ALL internet providers), but it will allow
you to see and experiment with other services.

Knowledge is power. Maybe by experimenting you will see what Lee is
talking about..

Had not received list mail at my AOL address for days now. Have been
calling and writing AOL for 2 days and not any closer to getting them to
resolve the problem than I was when I made the first phone call to them.
All they do is transfer you since they do not know how to help you. You
just get the transfer run around. Emails I sent were responding to me
what look like a generic computer response. I changed to this email and
let Margery know to change my address and within 5 minutes I was getting
list mail. I have been getting list mail at this address since last
night. STILL NOT ONE LIST MAIL AT THE AOL ADDRESS. I told Margery to
delete the AOL and I am staying with Yahoo.

I have been with AOL for 12 years but in the past year they just
keeping worse with their service and tech support. I guess they just got
to big and cannot handle it. Not to mention all the incompetent
employees they hire.
