But I agree, I did feel a little harassed by the implications that if I did
not make my contribution quick and public, then I really don't love the breed
and appreciate the work of LHSH. I don't care for it, whether it's by the bell
ringers in front of Walmart, a St. Jude infomercial, a TV evangelist or my own
church, if I can't give cheerfully and of my own accord, then it says where it
is.

Are you asking why didn't more people respond to that one specific amount
last week OR "why" didn't those who did give make their donations public?
Actually, I find either question offensive.
When you are involved w/ a not-for-profit (which I have been), no matter how
passionately you believe in the cause, I've always found you do better
laying out the need and being appreciative of the response.
Demanding "answers" is a no-no.
Personally, I don't make donations (to any cause I deem worthy), to be
publicly recognized, so I don't go public with them. Others may want to go
public, and that's all fine well and good.
You asking why....not so much. In fact, a bit of a turn off.
It appears to me that now more than ever, not-for-profits are going to have
to "work" harder for the $$$$. In any given week, I receive mailed requests
from children's & veterans charities, health related causes (cancer, heart
association, etc. etc.), the local food banks, St. Jude's (a favorite!), and a
whole host of doggy things. Three came in the mail yesterday; one from the
SPCA w/ Christmas stickers, one from a local food bank where you could buy so
many Thanksgiving dinners, and one from the American Heart Association. No
doubt I'd receive telephone solicitations too, but the house phone is unlisted.
Anyway, Pauline, although I appreciate your passion and enthusiasm, instead
of demanding answers and criticizing the response, you might do better with
an heartfelt "thanks!". (I know some of the others who volunteer for this
worthy cause have already figured that out.)
