And therein may lie the problem. Perhaps these people are not merely SITTINGon
the board, a truly democratic and noble endeavor, but may be SETTING onthe
board, setting the rules, setting the rules for everyone, setting the
proceduresthat will advance their agendas. With so many members opposed, what
else could it be ?

OK, then there is not a problem. If they are not allowed to speak for the
board as a spokesman for the board, there is no problem. I wear several
hats, as do we all and even as a board member I never presumed to speak for
the board as an official dictate. That came through the minutes. But I was
encouraged to communicate as a person who had the information that I had
from setting on the board and in the meetings. There is a difference between
my speaking as a person and having freedom to speak and my having the
official responsibility to speak for an organization. There is nothing
secret about the decisions or the discussion that precipitated them, except
for closed session and that for personnel reasons only.
A board member should never presume to make official statements for the
board. That should come through a committee chair to a committee or the
president to the club or the minutes to the club, etc, etc. But that would
never keep a person who sets on the board and also is a member of anything,
whether a list or another club or to family and friends, from speaking about
their opinion on an issue or clarifying anything that was discussed in a
board meeting.
Then there is the problem of our addressing board business on the list. If
this is a statement that we should not do so and if we choose to do so it
will be ignored because we don't like lists, then we have a problem. But if
it is that we can discuss freely, even ignorantly, the issues that concern
us in the GSDCA, the WDA or any other organization, but that the board is
only going to consider those items for board discussion and presentation on
the official agenda and for vote, that are presented through the usual and
official channels, then that is as it always has been.
Certainly they are not saying that an individual board member may not
discuss things and gather ideas and form opinions and give information
through the other avenues of their life, whatever those may be. No, that
certainly is not what is being said. Because if it is, it may denote a
spirit of control as opposed to a commitment to service, and that is not the
kind of people we have serving us.... Right?
It is in the market place of ideas and the forums of discussion that truth
is discovered, as painful as that might be from time to time. Certainly our
board understand this and is free to discuss things with us. Right?
