The City Council of Plattsburgh unanimously approved a resolution which calls upon the New York State legislature to rescind New York's law against breed profiling and once again permit breed specific dangerous dog laws in the Empire State. We will circulate a copy of the actual resolution as soon as possible. BACKGROUND As a cost-cutting measure, the City of Plattsburgh eliminated its animal control staff. Subsequently, in response to two incidents this spring in which unrestrained dogs attacked other dogs--in one incident a dog owner who was protecting his dog was also bitten-- Plattsburgh is now seeking to overturn a state law which has served New York for nearly 10 years. New York State's breed neutral laws on dangerous dogs are among the most comprehensive and strict in the country. WHAT WE NEED - The Dog Federation of New York requests letters of opposition from every dog club, rescue group, law enforcement, working dog club in the State of New York. Further information on how to address letters and where to send them will be posted on the Dog Federation of NY website: www.DogFederationofNewYork.org In the meantime, PLEASE DO NOT SEND model ordinances, alternatives, substitutions, "at risk dangerous dog models", "give backs" or anything that in any way limits or restricts dog ownership. WE ARE NOT NEGOTIATING!!! Many, many thanks for your cooperation and support! City sends message to state regarding pit bull bans By JOE LoTEMPLIO Staff Writer PLATTSBURGH -- City of Plattsburgh councilors have sent a message to Albany: We should be able to ban pit bulls if we want to. The council unanimously approved a resolution last week that asks the State Legislature to consider repealing state law that bans the passage of dangerous-dog legislation that is specific to breed. The city had considered banning pit bulls after two attacks within a few days in May, but had to halt any action because of the state law. Councilor William Provost (D-Ward 6) put together the resolution that called for the state to change its ways. The resolution received unanimous support. "I think each city or municipality should at least have the opportunity to consider a ban," Councilor Michael Drew (R-Ward 1) said. "This is in support of home rule." A copy of the resolution will be sent to state legislators in Albany. No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
