MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA TO JOIN ALARCÓN AND ANIMAL ADVOCATES TO SIGN LARGEST
SPAY/NEUTER ORDINANCE IN NATION ON NATIONAL "SPAY DAY"
Councilmember Alarcón, author of the ordinance, will be getting his
Chihuahua, Corazón, neutered before the signing on the South Lawn during a
spay/neuter
drive for "Spay Day" that includes free spay neuter, micro-chipping and
vaccinations.

WHAT:
Los Angeles' new Spay/Neuter Ordinance, authored by Los Angeles City
Councilmember Richard Alarcón, will require all pet owners in the City of Los
Angeles
to have their cats and dogs (over four months of age) spayed or neutered
unless they fall under one of seven categories for exemption. Every year over
50,000 unwanted cats and dogs are born in Los Angeles, and over 15,000 were
euthanized last year. This ordinance will reduce the number of unwanted
animals,
increase public safety (as the vast majority of dog attacks are done by intact
male dogs) and decrease the cost to taxpayers. In addition, to celebrate
National Spay Day, the City of Los Angeles, PETCO and the Amanda Foundation are
sponsoring a FREE spay/neuter, micro-chipping and vaccinations on City Hall's
South Lawn.
