***Permission to cross-post!*** HSUS GAINS FOOTHOLD IN KENTUCKY July 26, 2011 --LOUISVILLE Despite campaign promises made to the contrary during his recent campaign, today Louisville's Mayor Greg Fischer inked a contract with HSUS's own JUSTIN SCALLY to be the next Director of the city's beleagured Animal Services division. For the last six years that division, previously under the leadership of discredited Canadian veterinarian Dr. Gilles Meloche, has been known for little other than scandal. The many accusations leveled at the department have included illicit sexual activity between shelter employees and Dismas Charities volunteers who worked there, two sexual harassment charges brought against Dr. Meloche by female employees, interim director Wayne Zelinsky running a sexually-oriented online business as well as thousands of animals going missing, countless botched or illegal veterinary procedures and multiple failed audits. Left with the broken department by his predecessor, Jerry Abromson (now running for Lt. Governor in Kentucky), Fischer promised a full investigation into the department and a new era of public transparency. One of the major planks in his campaign was a detailed position statement on improving animal welfare in the community, and he vowed swift and decisive action on the shelter with the involvment of all area stakeholders. While things began well, they soon went awry as plans were changed without discussion and negotiations on no-bid contracts were entered into behind the scenes. The stakeholder committees were abruptly disbanded and replaced with a small, hand-picked group whose members and were sworn to secrecy. Today, the need for such secrecy became apparent as Mayor Fischer inked the directorship deal with the youthful Scally, who has taken more animals away from their owners than he has ever placed into new homes. In 2005-2006, Scally was an animal control officer in the Baltimore area when he developed a close relationship with the Humane Society of the United States and became a convert to their philosophy of Animal Extremism. In early 2007, at the age of 21, he became the shelter director in Wayne County, North Carolina--a position he was approved for by the county Judge Executive over Commissioner's objections to his age and lack of experience because he came with the express endorsement of the HSUS. It was there that, along with his co-horts at HSUS, he brought the national spotlight to Wayne County over the highly-publicized raid of the Thornton Kennels in which 283 dogs were seized. Mrs. Thornton (age 66) was found guilty in Wayne County court on 12 counts of animal cruelty and given a suspended sentence. Veterinarian speaking to the press cited rampant dental disease in the dogs. After the raid, he traveled to the state capitol and, in lock-step with his Extremist friends, used the raid to demand harsher penalties and more stringent state regulation for all animal owners. Some of the laws that resulted recently brought an end to all medical research at Duke University. Almost immediately, he was offered a prestigious position with the Humane Society of the United States on their new Puppy Mill Task Force and was spirited back to Baltimore. Many locals knew he was aware of the Thornton case for over a year and failed to act, now wonder whether the entire incident had deliberately allowed to deteriorate for the express purpose of engineering the legislative onslaught that followed. With the help of HSUS, Scally has traveled to countless states and participated in raids that "liberated" thousands of dogs from alleged puppy mills. Claiming to also be an expert in animal forensics, Scally is now bringing his show to Louisville, where he will soon make Gilles Meloche appear to have been a Boy Scout. While the Mayor insisted on a director with experience, he has hired one almost none. Claiming he supported the No-Kill philosophy, he has instead welcomed its mortal enemy. Wanting peace in the community, he has instead declared war on it. Being a rookie politican is one thing. Sticking your thumb in the eye of major industries and benefactors such as Yum! Brands, the University of Louisville's Medical Research Laboratories and the Kentucky Farm Bureau by opening the door to their sworn enemy is inexcusable. What can be done? Two things: 1. Please call Ellen Hessen, the Mayor's Chief of Staff at 502/574-2010 and courteously express your dismay. 2. Send a polite email to the mayor at Greg.Fischer@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Although the contract may be signed, this ain't over until we all give up and allow it to happen. PREDICTION: Expect a major, orchestrated raid to be enacted against an elderly and/or economically challenged citizen with the full assistance of his HSUS pals within the next 12 months in Jefferson County. Said raid will come replete with national media attention thanks to the efforts of his masters, and a demand for extreme legislation will follow immediately. ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2011.
