I moved too, from my first NEW home I loved so much...run out of town by the
pound and city hall because of zoning...to where we are now on 5 acres and have
been for 28 years. The pound is 2 properties away from me. They did phone to
make an appointment to inspect my facilities. I'm always happy to show my
small kennel. [I'm better than the zoo, I'm free! lol] So they arrived, and
asked lots of questions, saw the dogs and were introduced to each one
personally, studied their runs indoors and outdoors. Finally, they broke down
and were friendly., leaving saying they wished they could have a place like
mine one day. A little kennel that was originally an unfinished detached
double garage. We finished it, cut the concrete through the walls for hatches,
lay down drainage piping and brought in a water line, installed chain link to
make 4 10x10 indoor runs and poured concrete as a floor covered with rubber
horse mats topped with clean stallion shavings. Bought gates that were wide
enough for a small tractor to squeeze through for outside run maintenance and
lay down limestone. Best rock I have ever used, it doesn't move. Some runs
are 50' x 20 wide, some are much much larger. Kept the place neat and tidy and
painted. Music on, heat in winter, A/C in summer. A lot more went into this
little kennel to keep the runs perfectly puddle free, but this is to say, that
it doesn't have to be a fancy kennel building that costs a fortune. With fans
and good ventilation, you can put it together quite well.

Forgot to add that I guess my town wasn’t as cruel as Franklin Lakes – the
Health Inspector did come one time un-announced, and because I didn’t know any
better, I let her in. She then asked to see my AKC records – I said no. She
came back one other time, and asked to see my puppies, and I said NO. She then
asked me to sign a paper saying she was here, and I said NO. At the time, the
whole thing was a nightmare, and certainly didn’t help my poor dear sweet
husband’s health at the time, him having to watch me go through this. Also, at
one point, someone from the town was peering into my yard with binoculars – I
was FURIOUS, and ready to call the police. Can you imagine someone peering
into your yard with binoculars ? Because my bedroom and bathroom was in the
back, I didn’t have any window shades on my bathroom window – I soon got some.
Then another time, some town official waited for me to leave my house, and
walked into my yard taking pictures with
a camera.

Just wanted to say that everyone that says it is all about zoning is correct !
That was the trouble I ran into in New Jersey – never had a complaint from
neighbors; in fact, they told me they would come to court with me, I lived on
4 acres zoned Residential/Agricultural. Dogs are not agriculture. I was so
mad I was ready to get some pigs and chickens – LOL. I can laugh at it now,
but it was not fun then. It cost me a whole lot of money and aggravation. My
town did not have a dog limit; however, if you were SELLING puppies, then you
were a BUSINESS. PERIOD. THE END. Right before I moved to wonderful West
Virginia, after all the flack and aggravation, the town decided to pass some
kind of “breeder law” – you could have puppies and sell them. But I was
finished with New Jersey – besides which the cost of living there was
ridiculous for a single woman. The town did not care that I did not make any
money selling puppies – that was my problem. I sold them
– therefore I was a business and should be in a “Business Zone”.
I remember Paul Root on this List warning people about what was to come with
our “hobby” and everyone scoffed at him – he was right !!! And now we have
Stormy telling us this same thing – listen to her – she is right. It’s a mean
world out there when it comes to our “hobby” I took the easy way out – I moved.
