How's it going, eh Well, I guess everything has settled down her at the Funny Farm. Puppies are all settled in and moms and kids are doing fine. Final count for Digger is 5 girls and 2 boys. But I have an issue I would like to take to you knowlegable folks out there and get your opinions. This is the first time in many years that we have tried to deliver a litter without Oxytocin(sorry about the spelling, but remember I'm a lover, not a writer) handy, and it didn't go real well. We spoke to our Vet a few weeks ago and she said they no longer use Oxytocin. She said it can do much more harm than good and can do serious harm to a bitch. She told us all the things that can happen but that's too long to go into right now.BTW, our Vet is a Labrador breeder and has been our Vet for a long time. Now, here is my question. Is this true or just another way to get the dogs into their hospital, where they can do C sections and all that other expensive stuff. We have been at this for a long time(42 years) and have never had a problem with this drug, and never had a vet refuse to give it to us before. Here is what happened.Vision's delivery went fine up until the end. She started at about 9 am and was finished about 3 pm (no problems) we thought that was the end with 9 new sons until about 6 am the next morning when contractions started again.Normally, we would have given her a shot of Oxytocin by supper time the day before just to make sure but this time we didn't have it.About 7 am, Lynne sets out for the Vet, but on the way, Vision delivers another puppy, a little girl, DOA. We feel just too long getting out, but that is life. We so wanted a little girl from that breeding. Anyway, on to Diggers litter. Digger started about 8:30 pm. She delivered puppies until about 3 am. no problems. Then stopped until about 6 am. We have 5 girls and 1 boy. She then delivers another little girl, DOA. Lynne takes off to the city to a friend's that we know has Oxytocin. When she eventually gets back, we give Digger a shot and whammo, everything starts again. She eventually delivers 3 more puppies. One little boy we are able to save, but that was a struggle that took hours. Even used my asthma inhalers, but it worked. The other 2 were DOA. As I said before, we feel they were just too damn long getting here. Digger has 5 girls and 2 boys. That's not bad but in the last 10 days, from 2 litters we have lost 4 puppies, ALL GIRLS, that we feel could have been avoided. Anybody out there that knows more about this than we do, PLEASE jump in here. But we did add 2 relief pitchers to our baseball team and 5 cheer leaders so we are happy about that.
