Evan ,

Your thoughts and beliefs are ours as well. If we create it, it is our
responsibility for life. Do rescue work for a while and it's easy to
figure out why the problems exist. Lack of responsibility on the part
of people creating life. Not just in dogs but in every species of
animal. Horses are an absolute nightmare. You wouldn't believe the
mares who have starved to death with their foals still trying to nurse
them. Just had one nearby recently and had anyone known it, they could
have been saved but no one spoke up until the mare actually died. The
foal ended up dying also after herculean efforts to save him failed. We
don't want government intervention???? Neither does the horse world but
our local Dept of Ag Equine Rescue program has saved hundreds of horses
from people who should never be allowed to own an animal in the first
place. But they can't save them all. It is still the owner's
responsibility first but ultmately, it is the breeder's.
No, we don't want government intervention either but we're asking for
it - just as the horse world is by not taking responsibility for the
care of these magnificent animals.

Be careful who you sell to or place with, follow up and, like Evan
says, if you're not in the place to take back any dog you have bred at
any time for any reason, then don't breed.

Often i disagree with Evan, but sometimes i couldn't be more in
agreement with him. :-)

I have  very few dogs of my breeding
out there, but if necessary, I would  still try to get them back or try

for a good new home.... BUT....  you all need to be warned that there
HAVE been cases that AC has  come in to houses with over-limit dogs,
seized ALL the dogs, found

I have been involved with many of these cases, and they can be  tragic.

But, it comes down to personal responsibility. I see many issues when
someone sells a dog that doesn't turn out, or dies, and they agree to
refund the

money but do not have it. Or, they want to wait for the next litter to
get
some  income. I see situations where dogs bred by someone are in a
rescue
or worse  siezed and the breeder cannot, because of personal
situations, or
finances take  them back. I see cases where people sell a dog, and
refuse to
be responsible for  that animal.

It is simple. If you are not in a position to refund the money, if you
cannot take back any and all puppies you breed, if you cannot find a
home or
take back an older dog due to circumstances in the lives of the owner;
DO NOT
BREED PUPPIES!

It is not rocket science. When you bring something into this life, you
are
responsible for that entity. That is the reason I did not have
children,
had I  done so, I would responsible for them forever or until one of us
died.
When I  breed a litter, I am responsible for my actions, and I accept
that
whatever happens, whenever it happens, I have to be ready to take back
the
dog,  refund the money, replace the puppy, or whatever it takes to live
up
to that  responsibility.

If my life changes and I no longer can do that, I will not breed
another
litter. I don't believe breeding dogs is a fundamental need or right,
and
with  it comes responsibility. There well may come a time when we no
longer can
take  back dogs, or refund the money, or provide a new puppy. That is
the
time when we  will stop breeding more dogs, and then do the best we can
to
provide for those  who still are there.

I know I have purchased puppies to replace something I sold, but did
not
have  a litter at the time.  I have held checks for months to make
sure a
new home works out.  We have taken in old dogs, replaced dogs,
refunded money
and tried to accept the responsibility of our acts.

Everyone has to make that decision for themselves, but in my opinion,
if
you bring it into this world, you are responsible for it forever.

Or, as my mother used to tell me, "I brought you into the world, and I
can
take you out."  I always believed her.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.
