And there is one in every crowd. Now that we know the yucky coat and smell
that comes with it are not a age issue, we can say that it was historically a
problem we saw mostly in old dogs.

To be factual, the first time I ran into this, my dog was about 4. Once I
found he needed to change food he was fine. At 11 1/2 he had such a great coat
that I had to consider keeping his pelt when I put him down for kidney
failuare. As I was in the process of moving from Maryland to Miami and had not
researched a taxidermist, I was forced to let it go.

The Rottie at almost 10 also had a fantastic coat when she left us. Dexter's
coat at 9 1/2 was equally outstanding, but we let him go too.

Now Cuz has always had issues with dry coat. It is not icky at all, just
dry. I think he keeps too much of the fats he gets on his ribs and does not
want to let any go to his coat. He also has some pollen or mold allergies and
has been itchy for years. Antihistmines don't stop it completely, but they do
slow down the barking some.

Calling it the 'Old Dog' Odor implies that all old dogs become malodorous as
they age.

I just went and smelled my 14 3/4 dog and while you all know she has some
issues, odor is not one of them. Thank goodness.

I do find that if I am not conscientious about brushing my dogs the dead hair,
if not removed, does tend to smell doggie, and I agree that what they eat can
cause odors. Is he rolling in something? Have you had bloodwork done lately?
Checked his thyroid?

Sorry that I'm not of more help.

I think that old dog smell has alot to do with the food/foods the dog eats.
I have known a few different people who switched foods for that very reason
and had great success.
