I have stated this opinion in the past, but will again? ? I really think that
if you/we all want to back back to "viewing littermates" etc., then we need to
change the Futurity back to what it was intended - a REGIONAL
BREEDER'S?SHOWCASE?? ?? Everyone enters and shows their litters in their region
and then you truly can evaluate litters and have truly have regional
representatives compete at the National
I would be very impressed to go to a Futurity and see 3, 4, 5 or more from the
same litter all together in a class

It is interesting the AKC has formed an Amateur class at point shows. Folks
are
already "dumping" on that idea before they even know if it will bring MORE
ENTRIES. At least they are TRYING something. Speaking of TRYING SOMETHING, I
REALLY hope that breeders/owners will think about supporting the Amateur
Futurity venue for another year or so. Mid-Atlantic has 25 entries for Amateur
this year and Midwest also has some good numbers. It really does take time for
new ideas to "take hold" you know. Then we have those Regions that just refuse
to even TRY IT. Not enough time, too much work, too much trouble etc, etc,
etc.
Use to be we were ALL in that class at Futurities many years ago. It was not
about presenting dogs to perfection, it was about bringing ALL the puppies out,
viewing ALL the litter mates, and talking about the great things we got with
such and such combination and how our lovely bitch just didn't "click" with
that
best producing stud dog and how we didn'
t want to mix and match certain dominant problems AND we had FUN, it was not
so tense. It was a learning experience, where we SHARED. There was no shame
in
saying, "hey my dog produces missing teeth when bred to such and such line or
don't breed your bitch to my dog because you know Ole Roy here, he can produce
very weak ears and your bitch line has that too, what about Rex, he is really
strong for good ears, and etc, etc." It's was about MOST BREEDERS helping
each
other breed the best they could FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE BREED.
What about the great news, thanks to Lew's work, of being able to nominate
your
litters FREE, yes FREE, PROVIDED the litter is nominated BEFORE the litter is
10 days old. Heck, you can nominate the litter before they are whelped. The
entry for the Amateur is $15.00. We all need to start walking, and work up to
a few miles 3 or 4
days a week. Or intice the grandchild, niece, nephew, next
door neighbor kid, or the young man in the park who stopped and asked about
your dog and has always wanted a German Shepherd Dog. I for one, if it is
still offered, am going to enter our new litters in the Amateur, come h---
or
high water I intend to be out there. The rest of you can have a good laugh as
you watch. I hope I can scrimp and save enough to have a couple of the very
best ones in the regular Futurity also. The high rollers can enter all of their
babies in the Regular Futurity but if I win the Amateur you will see me at the
National. BUT I will be PLEADING ON MY KNE
ES FOR A MUCH SMALLER RING.
The idea that it is TOO much trouble to feature both venues is not, to me, a
luxury attitude we can afford to take. Good grief, we want bigger entries,
more
litter nominations , but we don't want the show to start to EARLY or go too
LATE??? Will someone please explain to me how we can have it both ways? With
great big entries we never started later than 8 AM and maybe we finished at
6PM.
Of course I realize I am from another era (some would say a couple of
centuries)

If I could show my own dogs I would have no problem getting out there with
them - however I can't, as many other people are in the same boat as I am - now
with the point schedule being higher (we couldn't scrape together eleven dogs
for a 3 point major in this region, NOW we have to try to get to THIRTEEN????)
more people will either drop out or send their dogs with handlers, which I
cannot afford to do - it is becoming far too much of a "handler" oriented breed
for my taste. I will be staying home. I have a beautiful boy who only needs
his majors to finish but WE CAN'T GET THE JOB DONE OUT HERE IN NOWHERE LAND. I
cannot believe AKC raised our numbers for
majors.....!!
