One sunny afternoon in the Spring, I walked home from a day in Grade school
without my dog Adolph.
He usually met me at the end of the block before I turned the corner to my
house.
This day, the German Grossmutter met me at the kitchen door.
"Liebchen," she said, "Come, let us talk a little...... we must
talk about your little Dachshund now."
Now, the Grossmutter was born in Deutschland, lived on a Wisconsin farm in
Germantown, and loved Badger Dogs, that is to say, she loved the little long
Dachshunds almost as much as she loved German Shepherd Dogs.
We sat at the kitchen table together.
"Adolf is not here," she said.
"Your little Dachshund ran into the street, in front of a car
and........"
She paused.
I never saw my Grossmutter cry before.
I started to cry too.
I knew what the rest of her sentence would be.
Adolf was dead........my little Adolf who slept on my bed and met me at the end
of the block every school day as I walked home.
Naturally, the important question needed to be asked.
"Is Adolph in Heaven, Grossmutter?"
"Never mind Adolf for a minute now," Grossmutter said,
"Do you know how to get there, Liebchen ?"
"Will you be there to meet Adolph again?"
"Where is my Irish Grandmother?", I screeched?.
"She is a kindest grandmother. I love her better than you."
"Listen, little one", she replied, " The Book of Job tells us
that 'the soul of every living thing is in the hand of God'. And that
God will always do that which is right."
"You need to think about, just for a little time, about how *you* will get
to Heaven to see Adolph."
"I want my Irish grandmother", I yelled between sobs.
"The Irish grandmother would hold me close and sing to me about
Heaven."
"I told you once, and listen carefully, 'the soul of every living
thing is in the hand of God.' God will always do that which is right. And
that is enough for us to know."
" And Dr. Martin Luther says that if a daughter asks if her little pony
will be in Heaven, you must *never* tell her anything that will make her be
disappointed about how Heaven will be."
Ah.........Those German Grossmutters.
Sometimes they can be very hard to understand.
Sometimes Grossmutter made me wish I was all Irish, on my father's side of
the family too, not just my mother's side.
But, the Lord bless her sainted German departed soul, she really *did* get me
to thinking about how I was supposed to get to Heaven in order to play and romp
with Adolph again.
