The year I judged the NE Futurity in 05 had an original entry of 168 - of
course there were absentees. What I am noticing is that the number of
MATURITY ENTRIES is down. What is happening to all those promising
youngsters? Frankly, I was glad to see that the entries this year 08 are
not off as much from 07 as they have been in the last 5 or 6 years.
Fewer handlers , expenses, fewer breeders, are all part of the problem. You
will notice that 2 of the larger entries
are brought in my new judges for the Futurity. I wish more breeders would
make it a point to attend the judges seminar so that Regions would have more
breeders that are not AKC Judges to choose from.
It is helpful to have thoughts and suggestions from Breeders.

I agree. The Northeast and Mid Atlantic used to have the largest Fut/Mats
in the country. At the last Fut we hosted (2002 in CT) we had over 160
dogs
entered. And that was down from the over 200 entries back in the early
90s.
At this rate we will have to consolidate regions to have any kind of
meaningful Fut/Mat results. And lets not forget that there are typically
significant
absentees from these numbers. It's just a shame what is happening here.
How
much of it is simply not enough handlers? Not enough money? Fewer and
fewer breeders with clients willing to show? So sad for sure.
