There is no denying the fact that there is a great deal of opportunity for a
club to "make" money on the weekend they hold a futurity.
However, depending on the date, schedule, adjoining specialty judges,
location, etc., there is an equal risk placed on a futurity giving club.
This risk/benefit ratio is the same risk/benefit that these clubs have for
regular specialty shows; however, they don't get a "percentage" of the
entry, they get the entire entry that they have to then pay their expenses
from. They don't get a "percentage" of advertising, they get the entire
amount. And finally, they have the CHOICE of how much they are going to
spend on Trophies; they are not locked into paying for the trophies for a
futurity that may or may not have enough entries to cover the costs.
The point I'm making is... the GSDCA gets approximately enough money to
cover the trophies from Purina.
The WIN/WIN situation for everyone, including the GSDCA, the Membership and
the Futurity, would be to keep everything status Quo... where the regional
clubs do everything they do now to get things paid for... but take the $$'s
that the Purina Sponsorship gives the club and turn that into CASH (check's
paid to the owners and breeders) Prizes, for Regional and Nationals.
Now imagine this scenario:
Each region gets $1,000.00 - Anything over the $9,000 mark goes into a slush
fund.
There would be base class funds from the fund, and if there were a large
entry, say over a 5 point entry for the region, then a percentage (to be
determined) would be also added: - Each Class winner/placement (owner and
Breeder split between the owner and the breeder/50-50) would receive the
following:
1st $20 2nd $15 3rd $10 4th $5 = Class $50
12 classes (fut & mat) = $600.00
BIF/BIM $50 = $100.00
BOF/BOM $40 = $ 80.00
Reserves $25 = $100.00
The 120 difference would go into the National Fund and 9 regions x $120.00 =
$1,080.00 - Futurity & Maturity Victor/Victrix would get something like:
$250.00 each (again divided equally between the owners and breeders)
Now... with the opportunity of winning regionally this kind of money, as a
breeder, would you be more or less likely to show your puppies at
futurities?
I realize the expenses are far greater than what you may win back, but let's
look at it this way, if you were going to show at the futurity anyway, you'd
have those expenses; but if you got lucky enough to be a breeder and owner
of puppy to win BIF at regional futurity - you'd get a check somewhere in
the neighborhood of $70.00. Not a lot of money, but certainly enough to pay
for a meal to celebrate. What if you won Futurity Victrix - $320.00 Not
enough to pay to attend the National, but certainly helpful to pay some of
the expenses.
For those people who would not participate anyway, it won't make a
difference. For those who might participate, it may make a difference if
there was the return of cash prizes. For those who always participate, I
think it's nice to get a cash return for your time and effort invested.
But maybe that's just me.
